Set the Table - Blue White & Yellow

Our dishes by Hutschenreuther in Germany are called Elysee.

They are named for the Elysee Palace, President's Palace in Paris.

I have paired the dishes with a collection of blue and white temple jars, daisies and Stella de Oro Lilies from the garden.

It is a beautiful set that is white, pale blue, dark blue with pale yellow.

The Salad plate has a butterfly in the centre.

The dinner plate has a fantastical tropical-looking bird in the centre.

The daisies and yellow lilies were simply laid on the table.

The wine glasses and tumblers are Miss Desiree by Villeroy & Boch.

We used a white tablecloth and white placemats.

Set the Tabl -- Blue White & Yellow

We used the Louis XV silverware by Birks and flipped the forks and spoon over to show the backs.

The napkins are doubled - a white linen napkin paired with an embroidered navy napkin.

The napkin rings are stainless steel and came from Bowrings a few years ago.

Blue & Green Summer Refresh

Blue & Green Summer Refresh

Blue & Green Summer Refresh

Blue and Green are cool colours for summer.   I have purple hydrangeas drying in vases that started to turn blue & green.

Blue and Green cushions on the couch and it is the beginning of a theme.

The beaded cushion and the beige embroidered cushion are from Pier 1 Imports.

The cushion in behind with the rose and dragonfly are from Home Sense.

A coffee table with a glass top and glass bottom shelf.  I always try to style half of the top and the opposite half on the bottom.  It looks less confused, then.

Sometimes I use trays to define different areas, but I like the open airy look in summer.

The alabaster book ends weigh a tonne.  I was afraid of dropping them on the glass.

I like to add a couple of objects of interest such as a few old books, the glass paperweight with the dragonflies and the cobbler's wood shoe form.

The Stone Lady sits on the dining table.

July in the Country

July in the Country

I was not raised on a farm, there is so much I don't know about farming.

I was raised in a semi-rural area and when I walked out my back door the farmer's fields were right there at the end of our property.

I used to watch Mr Kennedy on his tractor and then after the wheat harvest we were allowed to walk across the field.

Today, living in the country on a farm part time I have learned a couple of things.

I have learned that when the heads of the wheat bend down it is time to harvest.  This will usually happen late July.

These are such hot and lazy days.

I look forward to the wheat harvest and this is why.

Getting photos like this after the straw has been rolled makes me bounce out of bed and run out of the house in pyjamas and rubber boots, camera in hand.

It's not always easy to get the light just right.

Sometimes you have to wait for a cloud to float by.

What I didn't like about walking across Mr Kennedy's fields after the harvest was the wheat stubble.  It always scratched my ankles.

That's why I took to wearing boots.

I love those long shadows and the colour of the light.

Before you go....

We want to show you one more thing.

A spectacular summer sunset.

I like this one because at the top of the picture you can see an illuminated jet trail.

Thanks for stopping by.

Set the Table - Fiesta Cubana

Set the Table - Fiesta Cubana

Set the Table Fiesta Cubana

When I think of Cuba the first three things that pop into my head are:

Set the Table Fiesta Cubana
Pilar Cuba

Beautiful beaches,

Cayo Coco, Cuba

Old cars,

and Ernest Hemingway.

There are many other things that come to mind.

I love the Cuban people.  They are warm and welcoming.

Some of the posts on Fair Meadow Place contain Affiliate links.  These links will be noted near the beginning of the post.  The complete disclosure is noted in the Affiliate Links section at the very bottom of the post.

There are the fedora hats that the Cuban men wear.  There are cigars, and a drink they call Cuba Libre made from rum, cola, and lime juice.

When I found these plates featuring drawings of old cars and Cuban license plates, I knew I had to do something with them.

Set the Table Fiesta Cubana

There are four Cuban car melamine plates in the set and each one is a little different from the others.

I don't know if parrots live in Cuba, but I thought they added a little colour to the table.

Of course, there's the rum.

I don't know the name of this pattern.  I have been trying to find out.  It is made by Wm Rogers  Oneida.  I am guessing they are c1950's.  The pattern looks Art Nouveau, though.

Pilar, Cuba

Back to the beaches.

We were on two beaches in Cuba.  One was in Cayo Coco and it was clear, sandy and generally very good.

This picture and the first beach picture near the top of the post were taken at Pilar.  You can see the bottom of the sea here for quite a distance out from shore and this is where we found a good number of starfish.  The water when the picture was taken was about thigh high.

When you take off your shoes and put your feet into the sand here it is like putting your feet into flour.  The sand is so soft and fine.

I must say that I judge all other beaches by Pilar, now.

Most nights at the resort where we stayed there was a floor show with lots of dancing and music.  The young men and women dancers would encourage visitors to dance with them.  It was great fun.

As for Ernest Hemingway, I know that he spent some time in Cuba as well as sailing to and from there to Key West.
I understand that this book, 'To Have and To Have Not' was loosely related to Cuba and the Florida Keys.  I say loosely because Cuba is never mentioned in the book.
There was a movie made based on this book starring Bogart and Bacall, but the movie strays a bit from the book.

I noticed that there are places like restaurants and bars in Cuba bearing the name 'Hemingway'.
