Fall Front Porch

It is hard to believe that another summer is almost over and we are looking toward Autumn.

The summer wreath was replaced with a twiggy grapevine wreath.  Faux gourds, mini pumpkins, and faux sunflowers and fall leaves were wired and glued to the wreath.

We decorated the door, the window box, and the bench and placed a pumpkin stack next to the bench.

The made in Scotland tartan blanket is Buchanan Antique.  The 'antique' part of the name doesn't mean that the blanket is antique, but rather the colouring of the blanket is muted making it look antique.  The colours in the Buchanan tartan are quite a bit brighter than this blanket.

The window box holds three white pumpkins with some faux fall leaves.  It is too early here to find fall leaves.

The pumpkins are stacked in a short black urn.  They sit on cut garden sage and we have added sage between each pumpkin.

The sage was readily available from the garden and gives the pumpkin stack more dimension and presence.

Set the Table - Autumn in the Breakfast Nook

Set the Table - Autumn in the Breakfast Nook

Set the Table - Autumn in the Breakfast Nook

It is nearing the end of summer and time to think about Fall decorating.

I am slightly sad that summer is coming to a close, but, I am also looking forward to autumn.  It is one of the most beautiful times of the year.

Since most of the pumpkins are still in the fields, I decided to start in the kitchen with some painted faux pumpkins.

Set the Table - Autumn in the Breakfast Nook

We painted these pumpkins last year.

They were the typical dollar store pumpkins in varying sizes.  We painted them with two coats of chalk paint and then waxed them with a tinted liquid wax that we painted on and let set-up for a few minutes.
Next, we buffed them with a soft cloth leaving some of the wax in the cracks and crevices.

The plastic stems were replaced with dried pumpkin stems that we had from the previous year.

I pop off the pumpkin stems each year and leave them where they can dry out completely.

The bottom plate in the stack is from Pier 1 Imports.  The Cinnamon-coloured plates are from Bombay a few years ago and the salad plate is Coastline.

The amber-coloured glasses are from the thrift store.

The orange-handled knives and the jug are old and I think both came from England.

I like using this old table in the kitchen.  It is sort of rustic and has a few dings here and there.

We used faux bittersweet to add a bit of colour on the pumpkins.

Autumn remains one of my favourite times of the year.

I like the cooler temperatures, sweaters, and warmer colours.

Late Summer Decorating

Late Summer Decorating

According to the calendar, we have about one month of summer left.

It is the time of year when the garden changes from the lighter colours of summer to the more intense colours of late summer and early autumn.

Late Summer Decorating

The seasons are ever-changing and we flow from one to the next.

The pumpkins are still growing in the fields so it is too early to bring them into our home decor, but not too early to start transitioning.

Late Summer Decorating

One of the easiest ways to transition is to bring in some of the brighter yellows,  golds, deep greens, and browns.

Late Summer Decorating

Have some fun with it.

Late Summer Decorating

Try out some new throw pillow covers.

I change my pillow covers frequently.  I always use the same feather inserts and the best price I have found for these is at Ikea.

Late Summer Decorating

Whenever throw pillows come with inserts I usually give them away and use my feather inserts.

I like the way the feather inserts mould to my back, they are easy to fluff, and they never get hard or flat.  They are easy to store when not in use and take up less storage space.  That is because the air can be pushed out of the inserts and then placed in a sealed plastic bag.

Late Summer Decorating

I store the pillow covers in a storage box in my linen closet.

This owl looks at us as though he thinks the human race is out to lunch.  He is cute, though, and he makes me smile.

The jug holding the flowers is Jacobean and very old.  It belonged to my grandmother.  Unfortunately, it has a chip and a crack that you can't see because the flowers cover it.

The jug is almost the same colour as the gold velvet pillows.
The crystals are also gold-coloured.

Late Summer Decorating

I almost always have a stack of books somewhere.

There are just two types of flowers in the pitcher Black-eyed Susans and Astilbe.

The leopard print is just fun and adds a bit of quirkiness to the decor.
Animal prints are still popular.

The horse pitcher, which I believe is actually a creamer, holds more of the same flowers with the addition of some Maiden Hair Fern curled down over the handle.

I have done some sourcing of pillows which you can see below.

Looking ahead, I have focussed on the fall season as well and found some fun pillows to round out fall decor.

These are some of my favourites so far.

My owl cushion is no longer available, but I found another one that is similar.

Have some fun planning your Fall decor.
