Set the Table - Hearts & Flowers

Valentine's Day can be such a sweet day for some, but for others, it can be a day when you wish it would all just go away.

I remember one Valentine's Day when I was feeling particularly lonely, a thoughtful friend brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

I'll never forget how it lifted my spirits.  I don't think that she knew how much it meant to me.

That was many years ago and we have not been in touch for a long time.

I think it is a good idea to do something for someone who is alone for the first time, especially at this time of year.  It could be a bouquet of flowers, a card, or even a phone call.

I made the small lace and wire hearts and the tutorial for them is HERE.  These hearts are made the same way as in the tutorial only they are smaller.

We made some extra hearts and left one side of the wire long enough to push into the flower arrangement.

Two of the hearTs were left bare and the third heart was given the lace treatment.

The Plate Stack

The plate stack starts with a gold charger.  No linens were used as a base for the table setting.

The next plate in the stack is Antique Scroll HERE.  

The next plate is actually a handled cake plate called Old English Garden by Royal Albert.

Next is a square salad plate from Old Britain Castles in pink by Johnson Brothers.

The top plate is by Favolina and made in Poland.  They are from the thrift store and I just have these six plates.  I was unable to find the pattern at Replacements.

Here is another look at the plates in the stack.

The napkins are pink cotton damask that we have enjoyed using for a few years.

The silverware is vintage Community Plate called Evening Star.

The napkins are a soft pink Damask that we have enjoyed for several years.

The napkin rings I made once upon a time from wire and beads.  I don't have a tutorial for them.

Flowers were arranged in the bottom of an ironstone casserole.

Set The Table for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a great time to celebrate with kids and loved ones.  It's a day to show them how much you love them and maybe cook a special meal.  Even better, they might want to cook for you.

Whatever your plans for the day, I hope it is filled with fun and love and special memories.

Let's get busy and Set the Table

I started with my Mother's hand crocheted tablecloth layered over a Grey tablecloth.

I used Silver Chargers and White Tea Platters by Royal Albert as plates.  On top, I used Red Transferware Salad Plates.

I set out the Adam Silver flatware.  The side plates are Red Transferware under White Porcelain.

The stemware I chose is also pink.

I used White Linen Napkins and Pink Beaded Hearts at each place setting.

The hearts I have had for a few years and I enjoy bringing them out at this time of year.

I actually made the beaded napkin rings some years ago when my daughter was younger.  We were both beading things back then.

I was able to find some Pink Macaroons at the store to finish.  

The Red Transferware Platter on the right next to the flowers was given to me by a friend.  The glaze is crazed and the white background doesn't look so white anymore.  It is simply stamped England on the back with no maker's name.

A wooden love letter sits under the flowers.

Whenever I set the table I try to balance it with colour and metallics and texture.  I like to repeat elements that are the same.  Pink and White was my starting point.  Then I added Grey and/or Silver.  There is texture in the tablecloth, the flowers, the beaded hearts and the napkin rings.  Try to make sure that each of the elements shows up throughout your design.  At some point, it will come together and look cohesive.
